Campus History
Message from the Director

Sonora Norte Campus is one of 3 locations of Tecnológico de Monterrey at the state of Sonora, located at Hermosillo, state's capital

The vegetation and desert landscapes are characteristics that distinguish us and give identity to our campus.

One of our most iconic places is the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Park (PEI), where the School of Engineering laboratories and the Eugenio Garza Laguera Entrepreneurship Institute (IEEGL) are located.

The effort and innovation that our students cultivate in this building are a source of pride for Sonora Norte.

In Building III, you will find the multipurpose room, library, and media laboratories.

The creativity of the young people makes this place one of the most visited.

Outside the building, you can see the symbol of our campus: the time capsule, in which recent graduates deposit a message for their future selves.

Prepa Tec is located at the highest point of the campus; our students, like bighorn sheep, view different perspectives from the heights.

Our Sports Center has everything necessary to offer healthy and athletic training.

It contains the sports fields, the gym, athletics track, swimming pool and the Borregos Arena.

Committed to the comprehensive development of our students, we have established ourselves as one of the best universities in Sonora, in addition to holding the top position nationally among private universities.

We invite you to learn more about our campus and our students.

Tec de Monterrey campus Sonora Norte is waiting for you.

The Sonora Norte Campus of Tec de Monterrey was created in 1983 when the dream of a visionary group of businessmen led by Mr. Enrique Mazón López came true. Businessmen were convinced of the great impact that the union of their efforts, talents and resources would have in order to have Tec de Monterrey in Hermosillo.

Throughout these years, the Institution has firmly maintained the principles of Mr. Eugenio Garza Sada, founder of Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Unidad Foranea Sonora Norte (1983)
Sonora North Foreign Unit (1983).

As a first step towards the formation of the ITESM Hermosillo Unit, in May 1982, the Vice-Rector of the Northern Zone, Dr. Gonzalo Mitre Salazar, and the first director of the Unit, engineer Antonio Quintal Berny, met in order to conduct a study to determine the image that the Institute had in the region, and to base the proposal to expand activities in Hermosillo before the COEPES (State Commission for the Planning of Higher Education), which was finally presented in May 1983.

It was determined that the image of the university was high in its academic quality, faculty, study programs, and facilities. It was also revealed that 46.7% of this group of students would continue their professional studies outside the State of Sonora

This fact reflected the concern of the official agency PEIDES (State Indicative Program for the Development of Higher Education) to be able to absorb more students in professional programs in Sonora and saw the Technological Institute as an option to solve this problem.

Of course, the study gave favorable results to the idea of forming a new foreign Unit in Hermosillo, since independently of these official studies, the Tec de Monterrey in Sonora was well known since its foundation, suffice it to say that since 1952 the Association of Sonoran Students in Monterrey, AESMAC, had been formed.

There were several proposals: Hermosillo Unit, Sonora Unit, Hermosillo Northwest Unit, Sonora North Unit, Sonora North Unit, Sonora Northwest Unit. Several factors were taken into account. There were already two units in Sonora: Guaymas and Northwest Cd. Obregón. Hermosillo seemed to be local and North Sonora seemed like a bus. Sonora North was selected in order to attract students from Agua Prieta, Cananea, Nogales, Caborca and all of northern Sonora and for them to feel that the school was theirs.

The new university of the Tecnológico de Monterrey was inaugurated on Monday, August 8, 1983 with the presence of the Rector Fernando García Roel and the Vice-Rector of the Northern Zone, Eng. Gonzalo Mitre Salazar, all the members of the Council headed by Mr. Enrique Mazón López, the first director of the Campus, Engineer Antonio Quintal Berny and the representative of the governor of the State of Sonora Dr. Samuel Ocaña, Lic. Carlos Gámez Fimbres

With the creation of the Foreign Unit of the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Hermosillo, a total of 24 Units were established in our country, geographically distributed in 3 zones: the North, the Center and the South, and each of them reported to a Vice-Rector.

The Sonora Norte Unit began as part of the Vice-Rectorate for the Northern Zone with Dr. Gonzalo Mitre Salazar

The Unit began with seven professional courses and a Plan 2000 Preparatory School program. Currently, the Sonora Norte campus, with its eleven courses, has managed to position itself as the best option for carrying out your higher education studies in the state of Sonora.
