Message from the Director

On August 11, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the founding of Tecnológico de Monterrey in the State of Morelos, a high school and university in Cuernavaca with a long history of training entrepreneurial leaders with human sense.

Tec de Monterrey in Morelos emerged from the initiative of a group of graduates of the institution and businessmen from Morelos who dreamed that the region had a quality university in Cuernavaca.

In 1979, supported by the Tecnológico de Monterrey system and the first general director, Eng. Jorge Iván Díaz Aguilar, the Patronato (ETSEM AC) was formed, led by EXATEC and businessman Javier Esquino Núñez.

On August 11, 1980, the Morelos campus opened its doors in Rancho Tetela, located north of the capital of Morelos, with an initial population of 257 high school students.

"If you put a solid and strong stone, the dream grows by itself."

Mrs. Conchita Creel de Legorreta, a founding member of the campus board and a great driving force behind the first facilities in Morelos, tells the story of the campus.

Due to the positive response from families and the need to integrate a university academic offering, in 1981 the campus moved to Paseo de la Reforma, in Lomas de Cuernavaca.

This was possible thanks to the support of the campus board and the Banamex Cultural Fund, supported by Don Agustín Legorreta Chauvet (RIP), along with Don Pablo Legorreta, Conchita Creel de Legorreta and Maria Teresa Trouyet Hauss de Diericx.

Initially, there were four professional courses: Industrial and Systems Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Bachelor of Business Administration and Public Accounting.

The campus remained in Lomas de Cuernavaca until 2007, however, before then a new dream began to take shape:

Having a campus that reflected the great educational structure in its facilities.

The search for the new site began in the nineties and in 1996 the purchase agreement was signed with the ejidatarios in Xochitepec, Morelos, carrying out an expropriation process for its acquisition.

It was in the year 2000 when the first stone was placed on the new campus.

In January 2008, after 28 years in the State of Morelos, the Cuernavaca campus began classes in the new facilities located in Xochitepec, Morelos.

Both the campus and the Technology Park were inaugurated by the then President of the Mexican Republic, the Rector of the Institution, Rafael Rangel Sostmann and the president of the board of the Institution, Eng. Lorenzo H. Zambrano.

Architect Juan Carlos Pérez González (RIP), responsible for the architectural direction of design and execution of the new campus, said:

"We wanted the facilities to reflect, with their contemporary design, a vision of the future and represent a monumental emblem that would make the community feel proud."

The campus is a world reference and has won first place in the XVII CEMEX Works Award, for its architectural design and use of cutting-edge technology.

"We have shown that we are a strong and resilient community... let's dream big like the first founders," says José Antonio Moya, general director of the Cuernavaca campus.

Over the years, the goal of transforming lives has allowed the graduation of more than 4,000 students from professional careers and 5,000 from high school.

"What has the Tec done in these 40 years? Train leaders who have developed all their potential and talent for the benefit of their community and country," says Dr. José Luis Liñán, founding professor of the campus and Director of the Entrepreneurship Institute of the Cuernavaca campus.
